Evaluating Claims

  • Who is making the claim?
  • What evidence is provided?
  • What expertise or authority does the source have?
  • Can the evidence be independently verified?
  • What assumptions are being made?
  • What perspectives may be missing?
  • Is the information current enough for the question?
  • Is the source presenting evidence, interpretation, opinion or persuasion?

TOK teachers remain responsible for course instruction and assessment guidance. The Digital Library provides research and information-literacy support.

Extended Essay (EE) Research Centre

The Extended Essay requires independent academic research under supervision. The UT Prep Academy Digital Library supports finding, evaluating, organising and documenting research sources. Subject-specific academic guidance remains the responsibility of the student’s EE supervisor.

EE Research Process · Six Steps

  1. Getting Started
    • Identify a broad area of interest.
    • Conduct preliminary reading.
    • Narrow the topic.
    • Develop a focused research question with your EE supervisor.
  2. Finding Sources
    • Academic journal articles
    • Books and eBooks
    • Government publications and data
    • Credible institutional sources
    • Primary sources where appropriate
    • Subject-specific databases and reference resources

A normal web search can help you discover a topic, but strong EE research should normally move beyond general websites.

  3. Search Strategy
    1. Research question
    2. Key concepts
    3. Keywords
    4. Synonyms
    5. Search combinations
    6. Refine results
  4. Evaluating Sources
    • Author or organisation
    • Academic or professional expertise
    • Publication date
    • Evidence and methodology
    • Relevance to the research question
    • Bias or purpose
    • Whether claims can be verified
    • Whether stronger or more direct sources are available
  5. Managing Research
    • Keep a source log.
    • Record full source details immediately.
    • Separate quotations from personal notes.
    • Record page numbers or sections.
    • Save stable copies or links where permitted.
    • Organise files systematically.
    • Maintain a working bibliography.
    Use the source-note template →
  6. Citation & Academic Integrity

    Clearly identify the sources of:

    • Direct quotations
    • Paraphrased ideas
    • Images
    • Tables
    • Statistics
    • Datasets
    • AI-generated or AI-assisted information where acknowledgement is required under school policy

Students must never invent, alter or fabricate sources.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

CAS encourages learning through experience, participation, collaboration and reflection. This portal is a central access point for CAS guidance and future school forms. The CAS Coordinator remains responsible for programme implementation and student guidance.

CAS support focuses on experiences and reflection, rather than academic database research.

CAS Overview

Creativity — Explore and extend ideas to create an original or interpretive product or performance.

Activity — Physical activity that contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Service — Work collaboratively with a community in a reciprocal way to respond to an authentic need.

Planning an Experience

  • What do I plan to do?
  • Why have I chosen this experience?
  • Which CAS strand(s) may be involved?
  • What do I hope to learn?
  • Who else will be involved?
  • Are permissions, supervision or safety considerations required?
  • What evidence could reasonably demonstrate my participation?

Reflection & Evidence

Depending on the experience, appropriate evidence may include:

  • Photographs
  • Activity records
  • Creative work
  • Planning notes
  • Certificates or confirmations
  • Supervisor verification where appropriate
  • Student reflections

Evidence should demonstrate authentic participation and learning. The goal is not simply to collect as many photographs or documents as possible.

CAS Forms & Support

Pending school approval

School forms will be added here as they are approved.

Future forms may include:

  • CAS Experience Proposal
  • CAS Project Planning Form
  • Reflection Record
  • Evidence Log
  • Supervisor / Activity Verification

No school-approved downloads are listed here yet. Consult the CAS Coordinator about planning, evidence and programme requirements.
